Currently, Carmen is a part-time School Counselor at a local elementary school in Washington County. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Lehmann and mentor, Gary Probst, at Hartford Counseling and Life Span Family Services.

Carmen is an active member of the community.  Coaching volleyball and serving as a volunteer NAMI Teen Connection counselor are two of her most recent involvements.  She is also QPR certified and understands the seriousness mental health can have on one’s overall wellbeing.

As a member of the Hartford Counseling team, Carmen is well-equipped to effectively her clients explore possibilities pertaining to personal, family, educational, mental health, and career decisions. Her main goal is to help her clients create meaningful patterns within the environment in which they live, work, and play.  Carmen’s natural demeanor of openness and empathy help her clients gain a sense of security and empowerment, so she can purposefully assist the clients with whom she works.

Carmen’s strategies and skills are geared towards promoting, developing, and enhancing effective teamwork within the larger community.  As theories change and new research is added, she is under the belief that it is her responsibility to stay up-to-date on current research and practices to best meet the needs of her clients.  Each client comes with individual goals in mind, therefore, it is Carmen’s philosophy that each client requires a personalized treatment plan to best address client needs and help him or her progress to a healthy level of life satisfaction.

Entering into counseling takes both courage and vulnerability. I treat children, teens, adults, families, and couples, using an approach of trust and mutual respect, believing that every person is doing the best they can and has the ability to grow and learn. Identifying and drawing forth personal skills and strengths as well as an action plan for change is crucial for problem resolution. I address all areas to self-healing, working with body, mind, and Spirit. People are whole beings and all areas truly are connected.

I have trained with Stephen J. Bavolek, PhD, and I am certified in his Nurturing Parenting Program. Parenting can be tough, AND it can also be the most rewarding job you will ever have! I am invested in empowering families to create respectful, supportive homes in which everyone is accountable for their actions and is acknowledged for their strengths.

There are times when words just don't cut it. These are the times art therapy and/or guided meditation are preferred. I have found guided meditation particularly helpful with body image, fertility and pregnancy. Art and play therapy are a must with kids and teens because of their unique ability to relate to the world in metaphors.

Specialties include: anxiety, depression, trauma, grief.

Exhale. There are a million thoughts running through your mind as you look for the right therapist. Not to mention the reason you're seeking therapy. How can you tell who will suit you best? Should you close your eyes and pick at random? Maybe your job has been demanding, and relationships feel like work. Maybe school is becoming increasingly stressful, or you just need someone to talk to. There is no “wrong” reason to seek therapy. Whether you have specific issues you need to process, or you’re simply not feeling like yourself, we can work on personal growth and sustainable coping skills that will benefit your lifestyle.

One of my primary strategies to achieve this is by helping you pinpoint your values, and uncover patterns that no longer serve you. From there we can collaborate to identify tools and behaviors that will help your outside world match the inside.

You’re making your best effort to have it all together, but life is a lot to manage. We all deserve to have a moment of exhale in the midst of our busy schedules to process life or manage anxiety, stress or low mood. Allow me to meet you where you’re at.

In modern society, we delegate the title of "artist" to an increasingly select few. But I believe there is an artist in everyone, and discovering that potential involves the process of unlearning the large role that negative self-talk has in our everyday lives. I see counseling as the next step in a lifelong process of learning: learning about yourself and the world around you. While the traditional education system is built for a select few, I aim to meet at the place where you feel most skilled, and build from there to widen your prospects and help you realize your dreams.

Specialties include: mood disorders.
